Part1. What is Optic ID

In the same way that Touch ID revolutionized authentication using a fingerprint and Face ID revolutionized authentication using facial recognition, Optic ID revolutionizes authentication using iris recognition.

How it Works

Optic ID uses the high-performance eye-tracking system of LEDs and infrared cameras on Apple Vision Pro devices to capture images of your iris. This iris image data is processed on the Secure Enclave and the Apple M2 chip’s neural engine, where it is transformed into a mathematical representation for enrollment. When you authenticate with Optic ID, the same process is used to compare your iris to the enrolled biometric data to determine if there is a match.

Control and accessibility

You have control over how Optic ID is used on your Apple Vision Pro. You can adjust the settings to enable or disable specific features, such as using Optic ID to unlock your device. Optic ID also supports accessibility options, such as allowing users to control their device with only one eye or using passcode authentication if Optic ID is not feasible.

Security and privacy

Optic ID data, including mathematical representations of your iris, is encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. It never leaves your device and is not backed up to iCloud or any other location. Eye-tracking data is also not shared with third-party apps or websites.

The probability of a random person in the population being able to unlock your Apple Vision Pro using Optic ID is less than 1 in 1,000,000. Optic ID also incorporates safety measures such as limiting the number of unsuccessful match attempts before a passcode is required.

Note

To use Optic ID to make a purchase within an app or on a website in Safari, go to Settings > Optic ID & Passcode and make sure that Wallet & Apple Pay is turned on. 

Part2. How to Set Up it

Follow these steps

1. Go to Settings, then choose Optic ID & Passcode. 
2. Select Set up Optic ID and follow the onscreen steps. 
3. If you need vision correction, you can set up Optic ID with your ZEISS Optical Inserts already paired, or without your ZEISS Optical Inserts. If you set up Optic ID without ZEISS Optical Inserts, you can set up Optic ID with ZEISS Optical Inserts later in Settings. 

*If you didn’t already set up a passcode, you’re prompted to create a passcode. 

When you need to use a passcode

After you set up Optic ID, you need to enter your passcode to unlock your Apple Vision Pro when:

• You turn on or restart Apple Vision Pro.
• You haven’t unlocked Apple Vision Pro for more than 48 hours.
• You haven’t unlocked Apple Vision Pro with the passcode in the last 6.5 days, and you haven’t unlocked it with Optic ID in the last 4 hours.
• There are five consecutive unsuccessful attempts to unlock Apple Vision Pro with Optic ID.

*After you enter your passcode, you can use Optic ID again. 

Note

Make sure that your Apple Vision Pro fits correctly and that nothing is obstructing your eyes.
